Police to cut back DARE program

Chalk up DARE, the drug abuse prevention program program that sends officers into schools, as another casualty of the tough fiscal times.

The Honolulu Police Department announced Thursday that it will cut back its DARE presence from 120 schools islandwide to 41.

In a statement, HPD Chief Louis Kealoha said, "Given the current economic situation, the Honolulu Police Department has been evaluating noncore services and programs. This is why, after 25 years, we have made the difficult decision to reduce the number of officers assigned to the DARE program as well as the number of participating schools."

There are 15 officers assigned to DARE, which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, and it’s still unclear what that number will be reduced to.

The 41 schools that will still have DARE programs are considered high-risk..
