Man gets probation for trying to smuggle cock-fighting gaffs through Honolulu airport

A 66-year-old Kalihi man will not go to jail for trying to smuggle 38 cock-fighting gaffs into the state.

A federal judge sentenced Eduardo Abellana Monday to one year of probation and fined him $500.

Customs and Border Protection officials at Honolulu Airport found the gaffs in a box Abellana had as part of his luggage. They had been wrapped in aluminum foil and carbon paper and hidden in a karaoke machine.

The gaffs are small knives that attach to the backs of roosters’ legs intended to hurt or kill other roosters.

Abellana admitted he brought the gaffs with him when he returned last July from a trip to the Philippines. He also admitted he intended to sell them.
