BYUH, HPU ranked in D-II tennis

Undefeated Brigham Young-Hawaii was ranked No. 2 and Hawaii Pacific No. 5 in the ITA Division II women’s tennis rankings yesterday.

The Seasiders (22-0) are No. 1 in the West Region and the Sea Warriors (13-4) are No. 2. The fifth-place national ranking is the highest in the HPU’s program history.

BYUH is ranked second behind three-time defending NCAA D-II champion Armstrong Atlantic.

Yesterday, the Seasiders defeated College of Idaho 9-0 in Laie.

Elwen Li, Salina Aranda, Shawni Porter and Sasha Ulbrichtova all won in singles and doubles for BYUH.

BYUH men triumph
Diego Miranda and Daniel Lawler won in singles and doubles matches yesterday in Laie to lead the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s tennis team to an 8-1 victory over College of Idaho.

The Seasiders improved to 11-6.

Vulcans win 2 in softball

Asha Prithvira singled in Bryanna Hardy with one out in the bottom of the 10th as Hawaii-Hilo completed a sweep of yesterday’s PacWest softball doubleheader in Belmont, Calif., winning the second game 5-4.

The Vulcans held on for a 1-0 win in the opener, with the lone run coming in the fourth when Tessa Truong scored from third on an error. Amber Waracka tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts in picking up the victory.

UHH (11-8, 9-3) rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the nightcap against the Argos (13-14, 5-7), scoring twice in the sixth and tying the game in the bottom of the seventh — the last inning of regulation — on Kanani Numata’s RBI double that scored Amanda Tellez.

Sea Warriors sweep doubleheader

Kozy Toriano scored the winning run on Laine Shikuma’s sacrifice fly to left in the bottom of the seventh to give Hawaii Pacific a 3-2 comeback win over Dominican in the second game of yesterday’s PacWest softball doubleheader in San Rafael, Calif.

The seventh-ranked Sea Warriors (20-6, 10-4) won the opener 12-0 in five innings, helped by a six-run fourth.

In the nightcap, HPU rallied for two runs to tie it in the fifth, getting run-scoring singles from Alyssa Aipa and Celina Garces. Ashley Valine (2-0) gave up seven hits and struck out three to earn the win against the Penguins (1-16, 0-6).

Chaminade drops 2 on road

Chaminade managed just one run in losing its PacWest softball doubleheader to Academy of Art yesterday in Brisbane, Calif., 6-1 and 11-0 in five innings.

In the opener, the Silverswords (7-19, 3-9) scored in the fourth when Alyssa Dumlao singled in Tia Perreira against the Urban Knights (17-9, 9-3).
