Honolulu Star-Advertiser reporter Allison Schaefers has won two national business journalism awards, the second year in the row she was honored by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

Schaefers was awarded for feature writing for her package of stories for the Star-Advertiser in December about the Coco Palms Hotel on Kauai and the hotel’s former manager, the late Grace Guslander. She also won a SABEW award for explanatory journalism for articles about how homelessness in Waikiki was affecting tourism.

She wrote the Waikiki homeless stories in February 2010 for the Hono­lulu Star-Bulletin before the paper’s June merger with The Hono­lulu Advertiser.

The awards were for daily newspapers with a circulation between 100,000 to 200,000. Other winners included the Virginia Pilot for feature writing, the Detroit News in the explanatory category and the Orange County Register in both categories.

SABEW officials said they had 168 winners in 65 categories this year. They received 904 entries, a rec­ord for the annual contest.

Schaefers joined the Star-Bulletin staff in 2003. Last year she won a SABEW award in the breaking news category for her coverage of the last sugar harvest at Gay & Robinson on Kauai.
