Crews clear out 20 homeless campers in Kakaako

State and city crews moved the remaining 20 or so homeless campers in lower Kakaako this morning as part of a beautification project undertaken by the Hawaii Community Development Authority.

As late as last week, there had been between 70 and 100 people. That number steadily dwindled once the state and social service providers began last week to warn about this morning’s crackdown.

Anthony Ching, authority executive director, said the intent is not to kick out the homeless, but to ensure his agency can do its job of maintaining the area makai of Ala Moana Boulevard bounded by Forrest Avenue and Ala Moana Park.

Ching said that means no tents or other structures, and no camping on grass. Sidewalks are OK, he said.
