Alleged shoplifter arrested after returning to scene of crime

A Waipahu man, 25, was arrested in Waikiki Thursday night after he allegedly returned to a Royal Hawaiian Center retail shop he shoplifted from several weeks ago.

Police said the man tucked merchandise in his waistband and left the store without paying for it on Feb. 26. The store manager reviewed security tape from the incident and was able to identify him, police said.

When the man returned to the store Thursday night, the store manager recognized him and called police.

Paia man’s assault trial to start May 9

PAIA, Maui » A 49-year-old man will stand trial over allegations that he assaulted another man and his wife during a fight last year in a Paia neighborhood.

The Maui News reported that a May 9 trial has been set for Nathan Kaipo Spencer, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of second- and third-degree assault.

Prosecutors said that during a fight with neighbor James Foster on Jan. 22, 2010, Spencer kicked Foster and knocked him to the ground. When Foster’s wife tried to help, prosecutors said, Spencer hit her in the face.

Foster suffered a broken jaw, while his wife complained of pain to her left ear.

Foster was found unresponsive in his car about two weeks later, but police said an autopsy found nothing linking Foster’s death to the fight.
