Small tsunami wave reaches Aleutian chain

ANCHORAGE, Alaska >> Alaska Emergency Management officials say the first tsunami waves from a massive Japan earthquake have reached the western portion of the Aleutian Islands with no reported damage.

Department Director John Madden said early Friday a wave of about 1½ feet was recorded at Shemya (SHEM-yah). He says since the waves are arriving at close to predicted strength, “We feel we’re going to get through this with only limited damage.”

A tsunami warning was issued for the Aleutian Island chain, home to a dozen small communities well-versed in tsunami preparedness. A tsunami advisory was issued for the south Alaska coast including Kodiak.
