Sparks from power line fuse starts Big Island brush fire

Sparks from a high-tension power line fuse started a 3-1/2 acre brushfire that threatened homes in South Kohala today.

The fire started about 11:35 a.m. near the 67 mile marker on Kawaihae Road, firefighters said.

Responding firefighters found 15 mph winds driving the fire toward homes in Kawaihae Village.

A fire helicopter made water drops while ground firefighters worked the perimeter. Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 1:30 p.m.
