UH baseball: Kitamura’s 3 hits not enough in 4-3 loss

Mike Marjama singled and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to give host Long Beach State a 4-3 victory over Hawaii on Monday night at Blair Field.

Jeff Yamaguchi had two hits and scored a run for the Dirtbags (6-6), who have won three in a row and four of their last five.

Hawaii loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but Zack Swasey struck out and Sean Montplaisir grounded out to short to end the game.

LBSU scored twice in the first inning, taking advantage of a throwing error by catcher David Peterson.

The Dirtbags made it 3-0 in the second when UH starter Jarrett Arakawa hit Matt Hibbert with a pitch with the bases loaded.

Montplaisir hit an RBI single and Kolten Wong scored on a double steal to cut the lead LBSU lead to 3-2 in the fifth.

With two outs in the sixth, Pi‘ikea Kitamura hit a run-scoring triple to tie the game.

Swasey went 1-for-4 with a double in the third and has a hit in all 11 games he’s played this season.

Arakawa gave up seven hits and two walks, striking out six in five innings.

Brent Harrison (0-1) tossed three innings of one-hit ball, but gave up the run in the eighth to take the loss.

Kyle Friedrichs (2-1) allowed one run and one hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win. Josh Frye worked out of the ninth-inning jam to earn his first save.

Kitamura finished with three of Hawaii’s 10 hits and reached base four times. Montplaisir had two hits and an RBI to keep his batting average at a team-leading .405.

Long Beach State freshman Royce Murai, a 2010 Pearl City graduate, started at catcher and was 1-for-3 with a double.

The Rainbows (5-7) return to Hawaii to begin a seven-week, 27-game homestand starting on Thursday against Portland (5-3).
