Loyola Marymount rides 1 big inning to win over Hawaii
The Hawaii baseball team will look back and realize two innings were the difference between a split and a sweep.
John Lally tossed eight innings of one-run ball and Loyola Marymount used a four-run sixth to defeat Hawaii 4-1 and split a four-game series that wrapped up yesterday at Page Stadium in Los Angeles.
Jesse Moore allowed all four runs on seven hits in six innings. He had a 1-0 lead in the sixth when the Lions (9-4) strung together four of their eight hits. Evan Simonitsch hit an RBI double and Shon Roe hit a run-scoring single, both with two outs, for the decisive blows.
Hawaii (5-6) gave up five runs in the sixth inning on Thursday to lose a 5-0 lead, and ultimately the game. LMU’s four-spot yesterday was enough to avoid losing its first series of the season.
"I’m disappointed in today’s game, but (LMU) is a good club," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "I think overall, we’re coming together as a team and improved dramatically in certain areas."
The Rainbows turned three double plays yesterday and committed only two errors in the entire series after making 19 in their first seven games.

Offensively, they were held to four hits and didn’t score after the first inning.
Zack Swasey, who singled in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, scored on an RBI groundout in the first by Jeff Van Doornum. Sean Montplaisir also doubled in the inning for UH’s only extra-base hit.
"We hit about seven or eight balls right on the nose, but we just didn’t have any luck," Trapasso said. "We had about a three-inning stretch where we smoked a lot of balls and it seemed they would catch them a second before crashing into the wall every time."
Lally (1-1) got the outs he needed to earn his first win of the season. He gave up three hits and one walk and was pulled in the ninth after hitting Kolten Wong to lead off.
Swasey singled and Van Doornum drew a one-out walk to load the bases. LMU closer Ryan Hawthorne, who gave up his first two runs of the season on Saturday, got AJ Bayus to foul out and struck out Michael Blake swinging to earn his fifth save.
Moore’s six innings were a season high. Twelve of his 18 outs recorded were on ground balls .
"I know Jesse is disappointed and won’t feel like he pitched well, but he threw the ball pretty well and overall I thought it was a good outing for him," Trapasso said. "It was just one of those games we hit the ball well, we just didn’t get the hits to fall."
UH’s 5-9 hitters combined to go 0-for-17.
Hawaii can get back to .500 with a win in its final game of the road trip today at Long Beach State. Freshman Jarrett Arakawa (0-1, 18.00 ERA) is expected to get his first start for the Rainbows.
The game will be broadcast on KKEA, 1500-AM at 4:30 p.m.
