Television stations KHNL-TV and KFVE-TV are back on the air after an outage that began about 3:45 a.m. when their “transmitters tripped,” according to the KFVE website.

KHNL was back on cable TV before 10 a.m. and KFVE returned to the airwaves before noon.

The stations’ over-the-air digital signal, which viewers receive directly via set-top boxes, is also picked up by Oceanic Time Warner Cable for retransmission, so the outage affected both groups of viewers.

KFVE’s high-definition broadcast could still be viewed through the outage on Oceanic Channel 1005, because its signal has a different point-of-origin.

The stations’ transmitters are on the same tower as KGMB-TV, at Palehua above Makakilo, but the latter apparently was not affected, according to Miles Miyahara, fleet and facility manager for Hawaii News Now’s trio of stations.

Scattered power outages were affecting the Makakilo area this morning, and while station officials are certain the outage is weather-related, “it’s hard to tell whether (the outage’s cause) is something on our side or whether HECO might have affected something at our transmitter site,” Miyahara said this morning.
