UH has a heart full of baseball

Seven games into the season, the University of Hawaii baseball team is 3-4, has committed 19 errors and has this tendency to fall behind.

So why the buzz in Manoa? Because in their first two series, the Rainbows stepped boldly into the box against nationally eighth-ranked Oregon and No. 6 Texas — and didn’t blink or back down. Instead, they kept battling. Their 5-4, 15-inning victory over the Longhorns on Saturday, in which they rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the eighth, was a testament to determination.

"We competed in every game," Coach Mike Trapasso told the Star-Advertiser’s Dave Reardon. "We’ve got some things to work on and we will. But we went toe-to-toe with two teams that have a good chance to be going to (the College World Series in) Omaha.

"We got heart. That’s baseball."

Bus riders propel Honolulu to No. 8

U.S. News & World Report, after analyzing data from the Federal Transit Administration and the nonprofit American Public Transportation Association, ranked Honolulu No. 8 in its list of the 10 Best Cities for Public Transportation.

The selection was based largely on the high ridership for its city buses: Honolulu ranks fourth in per capita public transportation usage. The other cities (Portland was No. 1) have a record of continued improvements to their systems. Our fair city was the only one that has no urban rail system — yet.
