A 50-year-old man shot in the head by police during an exchange of gunfire in a Kalihi clothing business on Tuesday has died.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office identified the man as Michael K. Davis. He died yesterday at the Queen’s Medical Center. 

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of his death.

Police said the shooting happened after a security guard noticed a man trying to steal a car in a parking lot on Kalani Street before 10:50 a.m.

When confronted by the security guard, the man ran into the Libby, McNeill & Libby building at 1451 Kalani St., across the street from the parking lot.

Responding officers entered the building and were speaking with an employee of Surf Line Hawaii on the second floor when the man emerged and fired a shot at police officers with an improvised firearm, police said.

A 15-year veteran officer fired back and shot Davis in the head. Davis was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Davis had 32 convictions, 16 of which were felonies, including theft, robbery, kidnapping, and auto theft.

Police are conducting an internal investigation, which is standard procedure when an officer fires a weapon.
