Magnitude-5.7 quake shakes Mexico’s Gulf coast

MEXICO CITY >> A magnitude-5.7 earthquake shook Mexico’s Gulf coast today. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake at 7:07 a.m. (3:07 a.m. Hawaii time) was centered near the town of Acayucan in Veracruz state, about 117 miles southeast of the port of Veracruz, and it was felt even in Mexico City, 292 miles to the northwest.

It was relatively deep, about 83 miles below the surface and was felt across a wide portion of southeastern Mexico.

Veracruz state Civil Protection spokeswoman Nohemi Guzman Lagunes said authorities were checking bridges and building for structural damage. The quake did not affect operations at the Laguna Verde nuclear power plant or at oil-production facilities, she said.
