Wahine upset No. 3 UCLA in OT

Senior Carmen Eggens led the fifth-ranked University of Hawaii women’s water polo team to an overtime victory over third-ranked UCLA, 8-6, yesterday.

Eggens totaled three goals, scoring the game-winner with 36 seconds left in overtime. Dagmar Genee added two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (4-2, 2-0), while Monika Eggens, Amarens Genee, and Leonie Van Der Molen scored one goal apiece.

Emily Greenwood led the Bruins (13-2, 0-1) with two goals.

Balentine claims fifth at WAC Indoor

University of Hawaii sophomore Samantha Balentine finished in fifth place in the pentathlon at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships yesterday in Nampa, Idaho.

In the first day of competition, Balentine scored a season-best 3,407 points, while teammate Kaleigh Morrison placed 12th with her personal-best 3,169 points. Balentine tied for first in the high jump with a mark of 5-6.

Field events and running events begin today.

Seasiders edge Vulcans

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s basketball team squeezed past the Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans 59-56 in Hilo yesterday.

Erin Dastrup led the Seasiders (5-17, 4-9) with 20 points and five rebounds. Hillary Hurley tallied 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Vulcans (9-13, 5-9).

NW Nazarene crushes HPU

Northwest Nazarene routed Hawaii Pacific’s baseball team 10-2 in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Hans L’Orange Field.

The Sea Warriors took an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, but allowed five runs at the top of the fifth. Four Crusaders rapped out doubles.

San Diego blanks Hawaii

The San Diego Toreros (7-2) shut out the visiting University of Hawaii men’s tennis team (1-4) 7-0 yesterday.

Five out of six singles matches were decided in straight sets, but freshman Jonathan Brooklyn fell short in a 5-7, 7-5, 10-4 loss. Hawaii’s Dennis Lajola also put up a strong performance in a 7-6 (8), 7-5 loss on the No. 1 court against 34th-ranked Dean Jackson.

Seasiders dominate Vulcans

The visiting Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s and women’s tennis teams overwhelmed the University of Hawaii-Hilo 8-1 and 9-0, respectively.

BYUH men’s players Rong Ma, Diego Miranda, Agnel Peter, Chris Adamson and Huakun Andy Xing, picked up wins on their respective singles courts, while Kallen Mizuguchi secured the lone win for the Vulcans on court No. 6.

The Seasiders women conquered the Vulcans in straight sets every match. BYUH’s Elwen Li Boud and Annie Hwang picked up 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in the No. 2 and 3 games.
