Wie opens with 73 at HSBC Women’s Champions

Honolulu’s Michelle Wie stumbled down the stretch today to shoot a 1-over 73 in the opening round of the HSBC Women’s Champions golf tournament played on the Tanah Merah Country Club’s Garden Course in Singapore.

Wie is tied for 21st after the opening round of this LPGA Tour event, trailing leader Chie Arimura (68) of Japan by five shots. The 21-year-old Stanford University student carded one birdie on the front at the par-4 second en route to a 35 after nine holes. Wie broke a string of eight consecutive pars with a bogey at the par-3 11th.

The Punahou School graduate birdied the par-4 16th to move into a tie for seventh, but gave it right back with a bogey-5 at the 17th and another at the 18th. Wie shot even on the four par-5s. When she completed her round, most of the golfers in the field were done, including world No. 1 Yani Tseng, who shot a 2-under 70 and was tied for third. Only 12 golfers broke par.

Wie moved up three spots in the latest Rolex Rankings and is now No. 8 in the world and the No. 2-ranked American.
