Kunia man charged after car chase

A Village Park man who wound up getting shot during a scuffle with a deputy sheriff on a freeway offramp in Kunia after a car chase Saturday morning is now back in the custody of sheriffs.

James J.K. Fontanilla III, 39, was arrested and charged with unauthorized control of a motor vehicle, first-degree terroristic threatening, second-degree theft and third-degree theft. Bail was set at $200,000.

Alleged spear attack leads to arrest

Police arrested a 20-year-old Waipahu man after he allegedly shot a sling spear at a 24-year-old man Sunday night in the Pearl City area.

Police said the victim was outside his home with friends at about 8:20 p.m. when the 20-year-old man walked up to him, cocked the spear’s rubber sling and shot it at the victim, who was not struck.

14-month-old girl killed in crash ID’d

Police have identified the 14-month-old girl who died in a three-car crash in Kauai on Sunday as Kaylie Pagelsdorf.

The crash happened at about 2:20 p.m. on Kaumualii Highway near Dynasty Court. Three vehicles were heading eastbound on the highway when a county pickup truck and a PT Cruiser traveling behind the truck came to a stop.

Police said the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder rear-ended the PT Cruiser, causing it to rear-end the truck.

Three children — Pagelsdorf, her 2 1/2 year-old sister and her 5-year-old brother — were in the Nissan Pathfinder. Police said Pagelsdorf was sitting on the lap of the driver, a 28-year-old man from Puhi, when the crash occurred. Her siblings were sitting in the back seat wearing seat belts and did not suffer any injuries.

Police arrested the Pathfinder driver on suspicion of manslaughter and released him pending investigation.

Boat strikes and injures swimmer

A man in his 40s was seriously injured yesterday when a boat’s propeller cut him in waters between Mahukona and Kapaa Park, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.

The man was swimming with a friend at about 11 a.m. when a boat hit him and knocked him unconscious, the Fire Department said.

People in the boat pulled the injured man aboard and headed back to Mahukona Pier. The man was barely breathing, with lacerations from the boat’s propeller to his head, shoulders and arms, the Fire Department said.

The Fire Department got the call at 11:10 a.m. A department helicopter flew the swimmer to North Hawaii Hospital.
