Top take aim at state four-ball

Juniors have invaded the fourth annual Hawaii State Golf Association Four-Ball Tournament, which opens Sunday at Ted Makalena Golf Course. Last year, more than 80 two-person teams entered.

Among the many Hawaii State Junior Golf Association members entered are Allisen Corpuz, 12, and Kacie Komoto, 15, who are trying to improve on last year’s 20th-place finish. Both have won a Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association major.

Moanalua sophomore Eimi Koga, a Junior World champion last year, is playing with Kaimuki Middle School seventh-grader Kyosuke Hara, who qualified for last week’s Hawaii Pearl Open.

Last year, Ryan Kuroiwa and Jared Sawada shot 65 to win by a shot over Paul Kimura and Ren Frias. The championship flight was cut to one round because of a hurricane watch the first day. Sawada is a junior on the University of Hawaii team now, while Kuroiwa, an Aiea High School senior, will play for the Rainbows in the fall.

The A and B flights play their first round this Sunday, and the championship flight opens Feb. 26. All three flights play their final round Feb. 27. Golf starts at 7 a.m. each day.
