A state Senate committee has shot down a bill that would have banned the sale of toy guns to minors.

Of six members of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee who voted on the bill, only three supported it this morning.

A person would have faced a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 90 days in jail for selling a toy gun to a minor under Senate Bill 749. Because the bill did not define toy guns, the bill could have applied to everything from BB guns to water pistols.

House Bill 432, which also calls for prohibiting the sale of toy guns to minors, was referred to the Judiciary Committee but has yet to be scheduled for a hearing.
