Punahou’s wrestling program for budding stars continues to produce.

The Pumas wrestling program, open to students in elementary grades, continues to feed the Punahou intermediate squad. New boys state champion Zachary Hernandez (189) started as a sixth-grader. Outgoing three-time state champ Chrissy Chow (125) is another former Puma.

"They learn the basic things, like they learn about wrestling and some techniques, and they play games, which I liked the most," Chow said. "That’s what kept me coming back."

The result pays off at the varsity level. Punahou captured its fifth consecutive boys title and third girls crown in a row at the state championships Saturday.

Sibling celebration

Brothers Josh Terao and David Terao of Mid-Pacific did more than win individual titles at the state wrestling championships on Saturday.

They may be the first brother duo to accomplish their feats since the 1980s. Josh Terao, a freshman, won the 108-pound title. Brother David, a senior, took the 125 crown.

In another athletics tie-in involving siblings, Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Akoakoa Paleka-Kennedy took the 285-pound title.

His sister, Katelynn, was the cornerstone of the Warriors’ girls basketball team that won the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division II title. Her team reached the state D-II final, losing to Radford on a last-minute shot.

NFL Raider to speak

Former University of Hawaii lineman Samson Satele will be a guest speaker at Kailua High on March 2.

Athletic director Ramona Takahashi said Satele, a 2002 grad who is now a center with the Oakland Raiders, wants to reach out to his alma mater.

"He’s going to talk about motivation, goal setting and resiliency," Takahashi said of the former all-state performer. "He wants to give back to the kids and that’s exciting for our school."
