Hawaii guard Miah Ostrowski hit a jumper with 21.2 seconds left in overtime to lift the Rainbow Warriors to a 69-67 Western Athletic Conference victory over Nevada tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

All four of Ostrowski’s points came in the final 1:03 of the extra period as the Rainbows (14-10, 5-7 WAC) avenged a lopsided loss to the Wolf Pack (10-15, 7-5) earlier this season in Reno.

Hawaii center Vander Joaquim scored 12 of his career-high 24 points in the first half and shot 10-for-14 from the field. Joaquim’s previous career best was a 22-point performance in UH’s 86-69 loss at Nevada on Dec. 31.

Forward Bill Amis added 15 points and 13 rebounds and tied a career high with six blocked shots. Guard Zane Johnson finished with 11 points.

 Wolf Pack forwards Olek Czyz and Dario Hunt combined for 46 points on 18-for-26 shooting in the first meeting on Dec. 31. The duo was held scoreless in the first half last night and accounted for just 11 points in the rematch.

The scoring of guards Deonte Burton, Jerry Evans Jr. and Malik Story helped make up for the lack of inside production. Burton, a freshman, finished with 21 points while Evans contributed 15 and Story had 13.

Hawaii outrebounded Nevada 42-39 and had 14 second-chance point, none bigger than the last two when Ostrowski secured an offensive rebound before hitting the game-winning shot.

The Rainbows led by as many as 10 in the first half as Nevada shot just 28 percent (9-for-32) from the field.

Joaquim broke an 18-18 tie with a baseline jumper to start a 12-2 UH run. He added two free throws and dropped in a hook shot during the stretch that also included a 3-pointer by Bo Barnes.

The Wolf Pack cut the 10-point deficit in half before the break, drawing to 32-27 when Burton drained a 3-pointer from about 28 feet out with 2 seconds left.

Story tied the game 43 seconds into the second half by hitting a 3-pointer from the left side then scoring on a fast-break layup off a UH turnover.

After Barnes gave UH a 47-45 lead with the 3-pointer at the 11:27 mark, Nevada pushed ahead to a three-point lead.

UH closed to 55-53 on a Zane Johnson jumper, but went scoreless over the next 5:07. Nevada managed just one basket, an Evans layup, in that span and led 57-54 after Amis made a free throw at the 2:51 mark.

After a Nevada turnover, Johnson tied the game with a 3-pointer from the left wing off an assist from Ostrowski.

Czyz missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Trevor Wiseman kept a UH possession alive with an offensive rebound. Wiseman was later fouled on his way to the basket and his free throws gave UH a 59-57 lead with 1:03 left.

Burton answered with two free throws with 50.7 seconds left and the Rainbows struggled to get a shot off on its next possession, calling a timeout with 18 seconds left and just 3 on the shot clock. Johnson missed a 3-pointer and Burton’s shot at the buzzer also bounced off the rim, sending the game into overtime.

Amis hit a jumper to start the extra period and Joaquim knocked down a shot from the perimeter to give UH a 65-62 lead.

After Ostrowski hit a floater in the lane to give UH a 67-64 lead with 1:03 left, Burton responded by knocking down his third 3-pointer to tie the game again.

On UH’s next possession, Ostrowski gathered an offensive rebound and drained a 15-foot jumper to give UH the lead for good. After Nevada came up empty on its next possession, Ostrowski grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He missed the front end of the one-and-one but the Wolf Pack missed a desperation shot at the buzzer.
