REMEMBERING DR. KING 2. Hawai'i Friends of Civil Rights honorees Gary Hooser, left, and Jack Law talked at the 4th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friends Awards dinner Jan. 30 at the Waialae Country Club. Hooser, who gave up his state Senate seat last year to run for lieutenant governor, was honored for his support of civil unions, universal health care and affordable housing. Law was recognized as the founder of Hula's Bar & Lei Stand and the Wave Waikiki, and as one of the founding members of the Life Foundation.

CLOSING "THE PIPE" 3. It was the end of an era in local entertainment as Pipeline Cafe owner Greg Azus, left, and general manager Jed Roa closed "The Pipe" with a big "Final Day Blowout!" party Jan. 31. Azus had to shut down the popular nightclub/concert venue after city fire inspectors cut the legal capacity from 951 to 299.
