Makua Lani defeats Waipahu in D-II play
Junior forward Grace Choe and sophomore right wing Tiffany Nakamura scored two goals each as the undermanned Makua Lani Lions advanced to the quarterfinals of the JN Automotive Group Division II Girls Soccer State Championships with a 4-2 victory over Waipahu yesterday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
The Lions (5-9), who field the smallest roster (13 players) in either state tournament, will play top-seeded Hawaii Prep (9-2-1) in a matchup of Big Island teams in one of four quarterfinal matchups today at 3 p.m.
Semifinal matches are 3 p.m. tomorrow and the championship game is at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Sophomore midfielder Jahna Tascon scored in the 25th and 32nd minutes as Waipahu, the OIA’s No. 3 seed, played Makua Lani to a 2-2 halftime standoff. Choe broke the tie with a goal in the 51st minute and Nakamura added her second goal of the game in the 58th minute.
Mid-Pacific 4, Kalaheo 1
Sophomore forward Taylor Higa scored two first-half goals as the Owls dumped the Mustangs into consolation play. Two other sophomore forwards, AJ Johnson (42nd minute) and Julie Khil (57th), scored in the second half as Mid-Pacific built a 4-0 lead. Junior midfielder Moniue Ishikawa scored in the 66th minute for Kalaheo.
Kamehameha-Hawaii 2, St. Anthony 0
Freshman forward Harper Hottendorf scored in the 10th minute of play and sophomore midfielder Codi Kualii in the 50th minute as the Warriors topped the Trojans.

Kimberly Kishimoto, Monica Carlos and Tialana Greenwell scored as the Dragons shut down the Rams, the OIA’s No. 4 seed.
Kishimoto, a senior forward, scored in the 14th minute as Honoka’a took a 1-0 halftime lead.
Carlos, a sophomore forward, scored in the 42nd minute and Greenwell, a senior midfielder, in the 69th minute.
