Marine Corps commandant to visit Hawaii on Thursday
The commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James Amos, will make his first visit to Hawaii on Thursday after assuming duties as head of the Corps on Oct. 22.
As commandant, Amos also is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Accompanying Amos will be the sergeant major of the Marine Corps, Sgt. Maj. Carlton Kent.
The four-star general is the 35th commandant of the Marine Corps, and the first aviator to serve as the Corps’ senior leader, officials said. Amos, who was born in Wendell, Idaho, and is a graduate of the University of Idaho, was at one time stationed in Hawaii and flew the F-4 Phantom II.
The commandant and sergeant major will talk to Marines and sailors Thursday morning about the DSTRESS telephone hotline, which is an initiative to reach out to service members and their families who are seeking professional, anonymous counseling on how to deal with crises that arise at home station and during deployments, officials said.
Kent has served more than 30 years in the Corps, and is the 16th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. He was stationed in Hawaii as the company gunnery sergeant for Engineer Company, Brigade Service Support Group 1, 1st Marine Brigade.
