Shark attacks in 2010 increase worldwide

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — There were 36 shark attacks in the United States last year, almost half the attacks worldwide.

The director of the University of Florida’s International Shark File says Florida, which typically tops the list of shark attacks, saw a decline for the fourth straight year.

There were 13 Florida, well below its yearly average of 23 attacks over the past decade.

There were five attacks in North Carolina and four each in California, Hawaii and South Carolina.

Worldwide, 79 shark attacks were reported in 2010, the most since 2000. Six of those attacks involved fatalities.
