Local shops offer cabinetry options
In addition to hardware and home improvement stores, locally owned shops provide plenty of options to choose from when updating the look of your kitchen and bath cabinets.
FIDDLER’S

The family-run, third-generation business has been a fixture in Honolulu since 1955. It offers a wide selection of unique drawer pulls in every shape and size, made from glass, pewter, brass and other materials.
Square is in, according to manager Denise Fiddler, and so is bling. This ornate tree frog, above, sitting on a leaf, is custom designed by Edgar Berebi and accented with Swarovski crystals, for $68. At the other end of the price spectrum is a Podium square knob for $6.
Other animal choices include a shark ($27) and a glass starfish pull ($16.80) in blue and green, ideal for brightening up bathroom cabinets.

For a contemporary look, choose a sleek Bauhaus pull for $10 to $12, or one that resembles bamboo, at right, for about $27. If you prefer something inspired by the local environment, there are pewter lauae and monstera leaf, above, designs ($22.80), and even drawer pulls made of rock ($14 to $16).
Fiddler suggests using costlier decorative pieces sparingly as accents, while going with round or plain pulls for the rest of the cabinets in a kitchen.

Red Bamboo owner Carole Jacobs says she was inspired to open her Kailua shop after a trip to Bali. The store offers art, gifts, furniture and home accessories with a tropical flair.
Here you’ll find an assortment of brass drawer pulls handcrafted and imported from Bali for $7 apiece. Choose from a hula dancer (also available in silver), a pineapple, palm tree, starfish, plumeria, fish and shell. The gecko, at right, with its long, swirly tail, will surely catch your eye.

Unique pewter drawer pulls in the shape of coral and seashells are decorated with red sparklies for $9.80 apiece.
"They’re a fun alternative," says store manager Lee Ann Beasley. "They’re not your average beach or nautilus decor."
Beasley said to check the store regularly for new arrivals. Crystal balls and square ceramic pulls also have been a popular item, she says.
