Governor picks Rep. Morita as PUC nominee

Gov. Neil Abercrombie has nominated state Rep. Hermina Morita to head the Public Utilities Commission, subject to her approval by the state Senate.

Morita (D, Hanalei-Kapaa) is chairwoman of the House Energy and Environmental Protection Committee.

“Hawaii has made good progress addressing energy issues and Representative Morita has been instrumental as one of the key lawmakers in making that happen,” Abercrombie said.

Jeff Mikulina, executive director of the environmental group Blue Planet Foundation, welcomed the appointment. “Hermina Morita is a powerful addition to the Public Utilities Commission,” he said. “She understands energy policy inside and out, and fully grasps the urgency of Hawaii’s energy challenges.”
