Fernandez helps HPA rally to beat Hanalani in D-II
Chancis Fernandez scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half and Hawaii Prep defeated Hanalani 55-36 in a Division II first-round game in the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships last night at Farrington gym.
HPA outscored Hanalani 31-10 over the final 10 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals and faces top-seeded Radford today at 5 p.m. at Farrington.
Hanalani, which trailed by 10 in the first period, took its first lead at 24-22 with 3:20 left in the third quarter on a basket by Nicole Gonzalez off an assist from Kira Oyama.
The Royals took their final lead at 26-24, then Ka Makani blew it open.
Fernandez scored the first eight points of the rally, including two three-point plays. Katie Ho added seven points during the surge.
Tiana Tabac added 10 points and Ho scored all nine of her points in the second half for Hawaii Prep. Lana Queen had nine rebounds and Leahi Lindsey added six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Gonzalez scored 13 points for Hanalani. Sarah Liva added six rebounds and four blocks and Sarah Hyde had six rebounds.

Jennifer Uehara had 21 points and seven rebounds, and the Eagles pulled away in the second half.
Hawaii Baptist led 27-24 at halftime. The Eagles could have been up by more, but hit only eight of 23 free-throw attempts.
The Eagles took their largest lead at 54-42 after a 3-pointer by Kayla Yamamoto with 1:30 left in the game.
Yamamoto added 14 points for Hawaii Baptist. Jordin Ramos added eight rebounds, and Kimberly Au had six steals and four assists.
Honokaa’s Precious Chong scored 11 points and Demi Liu had nine rebounds.
