"DA KINE" AT KUMU KAHUA 1. Tonouchi's impressive new comedy, "Da Kine Space," Jan. 13 at Kumu Kahua. Lee stars as a beleaguered art gallery owner trying to keep his gallery open. "STARS" SHINE 4. Occasional light showers didn't dampen Liz Hata Watanabe as she presented "Stars of Hope," a fundraiser co-sponsored by the Hata Foundation and the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii Jan. 22 at the Pacific Club. Watanabe shared her VIP table with state Sen. Will Espero, left, state Sen. Glenn Wakai, who was the emcee, and island businessman Darin Yokoyama.

5. Hata Foundation attorney Matt Matsunaga talked stageside with "Stars of Hope" beneficiaries Skylar Soares and James Remigio. Remigio, a 4.0 student, choked up as he recalled the challenges he and his family overcame in staying together and finding a home. Soares spoke matter-of-factly about living with a rare immunodeficiency syndrome that is almost always fatal.

"HAPPY 18th, DUKE'S!" 2. The crowd was wall to wall as Henry Kapono Kaaihue, left, talked story with Duke's Waikiki General Manager Dylan Ching, party guest J.R. and TS Restaurants exec Ross Anderson at the beachfront restaurant's party celebrating "18 years of Aloha, Friends & Food" Jan. 21. In the 18 years since Duke's opened on the beach in the Outrigger Waikiki, it has become one of those rare places where visitors and residents mix, mingle and enjoy the contemporary Hawaiian music of artists like Kaaihue and Maunalua.

3. Party guest Angel Adams shared some aloha with Duke's kitchen supervisor Michael Day. Duke's is famous for the huge amount of food it serves when it's celebrating something. This party was exceptional even for Duke's.
