5 charged in armed robbery

Five people were charged yesterday in connection with the armed robbery of a Hawaii Kai recycling center.

A pursuit after the robbery Tuesday shut down Kailua schools and roads temporarily.

Among those charged was Liliha man Bronson Maneafaga Cambra, 25. Police say he is the suspect who eluded capture for more than 12 hours before being arrested near the Kamehameha Highway and H-3 freeway intersection at about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.

He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and was charged with first-degree robbery and two firearm infractions.

Police said he fled from a black Mazda that was abandoned on Auloa Road near Castle Junction.

Also charged were:

» Pomaikai Ah Mook Sang, 20, of Hawaii Kai, on two drug-related counts. She is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.

» Robert Berrios III, 32, of Hawaii Kai, first-degree robbery. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

» John Andrew Cullen, 27, no address, first-degree robbery and a probation violation charge. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

» Terii Nakaahiki, 39, of Makiki, two drug-related counts. He is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Officer fires at theft suspect

A Honolulu police officer shot his handgun at a fleeing auto theft suspect Wednesday afternoon in Kalihi, police said. The suspect was not hit.

Police said the suspect, a 44-year-old man with no local address, pointed a gun as he tried to run away from the officer, a member of an undercover auto theft unit.

Police caught up with the suspect on North School Street, where he was arrested. The officer and suspect suffered minor injuries, and both were treated and released from a local hospital.

The incident began at 4:12 p.m. at Kohou and Houghtailing streets. Police said undercover officers arranged to buy a stolen vehicle from two suspects.

Ex-boyfriend faces charges

Police have dropped an attempted-murder investigation against a woman who crashed into a building on South Beretania Street on Wednesday after driving her car frantically for several blocks with her former boyfriend on the hood.

Instead, detectives are now investigating the man on possible counts of terroristic threatening and criminal property damage, a police spokeswoman said yesterday afternoon.

The Honolulu woman, 46, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while the man, 44, was in critical condition. Both remained hospitalized.

Police said the man and woman were arguing at the Beretania Times Super Market parking lot when the woman began driving away with the man on her hood.

Fire put out at Disney hotel

Honolulu firefighters put out a fire last night at the Disney hotel being built at Ko Olina, fire officials said.

Hotel spokesman Todd Apo said construction workers were fighting the small fire with extinguishers on the 12th-floor roof of the eastern tower.

First classified as two-alarm, the fire was reported extinguished at 6:39 p.m. Firefighters responded to a call of smoke coming from the rooftop at about 6:15 p.m.

Woman jailed for 3 assaults

A Big Island woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually molesting three girls, all under 14.

Raysean Paglinawan was sentenced Wednesday by Circuit Judge Glenn Hara to 10 years for two second-degree sex assault charges and five years for a third-degree sex assault count. The sentences are to be served at the same time.

According to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, the 24-year-old Naalehu woman had pleaded no contest to the second-degree counts and guilty to the third-degree charge.

The victims, two of them sisters, attended Paglinawan’s hip-hop dance class. Court documents say the offenses occurred between 2004 and 2007.
