Top seed advances in USTA event

Top-seeded Michael Russell led seven American seeds into the Round of 16 yesterday in the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger tennis tournament at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.

Russell, the defending champion, defeated Woong-Sun Jun of South Korea 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

"I came out real sluggish and not playing well at all," said Russell. "He played really well. He hit some incredible shots."

Pro Bowlers to sign autographs

Pro Bowl players Jerod Mayo, Devin McCourty and Jonathan Vilma will sign autographs from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Kapolei Verizon Wireless store in the Kapolei Commons.

Mayo, a linebacker, and McCourty, a cornerback, are teammates with the New England Patriots, while Vilma is a middle linebacker for the New Orleans Saints.

Wahine dominate Dons in tennis

The University of Hawaii women’s tennis team evened its record at 1-1 yesterday with a 6-1 victory over San Francisco at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine won five of six singles matches, including Magdalena Ploch’s 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Julia Wartenburger at No. 1 singles. UH’s No. 2 Barbara Pinterova, No. 3 Katarina Poljakova, No. 4 Natasha Zorec and No. 5 Alyssa Nafarrete all posted straight-set wins.
