Council OKs Hannemann Cabinet trio

The City Council yesterday confirmed three more members of Mayor Peter Carlisle’s Cabinet — all holdovers from his predecessor’s administration.

Emergency Services Director Dr. James Ireland, Planning and Permitting Director Collins Lam and Customer Services Director Gail Haraguchi were confirmed by an 8-0 vote yesterday.

Carlisle’s proposed budget director, Michael Hansen, was among seven appointees whose nominations were sent to committee for confirmation hearings. Hansen has served as acting director since September, when the top two department heads retired ahead of Carlisle taking office.

Other nominees from former Mayor Mufi Hannemann’s administration being asked to stay on until 2012 are Transportation Director Wayne Yoshioka, Enterprise Services Director Sidney Quintal and Corporation Counsel Carrie Okinaga. Their nominations were sent to committee to be vetted next month.

Also sent to committee were new appointees Sam Moku, Community Services; Gary Cabato, Parks and Recreation; and Clarke Bright, Royal Hawaiian Band.

When he took office in September to fill the final two years in the term vacated by Hannemann, Carlisle asked Cabinet members to stay on for an interim period to help with the transition. Though some left, Carlisle said department heads who stayed on would go through a "probation" period to determine whether they could work with him.
