Fire damages workshop in Lanikai

A fire caused $100,000 in damage to a garage workshop in Lanikai yesterday morning.

Firefighters responded to a blaze on Mokulua Drive at 11:30 a.m. and had the fire under control by 11:47, said fire Capt. Robert Main. The owner was in the house at the time and was alerted to the fire by neighbors; the garage is not attached to the dwelling, and no one was injured, he said.

Police look into assault on 7-year-old

Police are investigating allegations that a 66-year-old man sexually assaulted a 7-year-old girl Monday in Waipahu. Police have opened a first-degree sexual assault case but have not yet arrested the man.

Man killed in fall from tree is ID’d

A 46-year-old man who fell while working on a tree Saturday has died.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man as Victorio T. Ulep of Honolulu. Ulep was trimming trees when his harness broke just before 8:26 a.m. Saturday off Nuuanu Pali Drive, and he fell about 50 feet, an Emergency Medical Services spokesman said. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center, where he died later Saturday.

Sex offender held for not registering

U.S. marshal deputies apprehended a man in Wahiawa yesterday on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender.

Glenn W. Botelho Jr. agreed to meet authorities at the Wahiawa police substation at 10:20 a.m. and was arrested.

Botelho was convicted in April 2000 in U.S. District Court in Hawaii of one count of abusive sexual contact with a person under the age of 12. After serving six years, Botelho was released on probation. One condition of his release was to register for life as a convicted sex offender, which he has failed to do since 2008, the U.S. Marshals Service said. Marshals investigated him after learning of his noncompliance and pursued a federal grand jury arrest warrant on Thursday. He is now at the federal detention center.

17-year-old crash victim is identified

Police identified the 17-year-old driver who died in a fatal car crash in Kauai on Sunday as Corbin Reynolds.

At about 1 a.m., Reynolds, of Kekaha, was driving westbound in a Toyota pickup truck on Kaumualii Highway near Manu Road when he crossed the center line and struck a guardrail. Police said he was thrown from the truck and died at the scene.

His 17-year-old passenger was transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital in serious condition. He has since been discharged.
