Waikiki Aquarium starts its next free volunteer training session for interpreters on Saturday. Participants will learn skills for sharing information on the aquarium’s outdoor reef exhibit and answering questions about Hawaii’s marine environment. Eight sessions will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Feb. 15, with additional one-on-one sessions. DFS Galleria opens ‘Vault’ with pricey and rare items

DFS Galleria Waikiki has just opened "The Vault," an appointment-only luxury experience for qualified duty-free customers, featuring a selection of coveted and rare items, from fine timepieces and jewelry to Johnnie Walker Blue Label Scotch whisky presented in a handblown Baccarat crystal decanter, with no two bottles exactly the same.

Among the handbags offered are Chloe’s Python Paraty in black python leather, and Loewe’s Crocodile Amazona structured crocodile purse.

Jewelry lovers will find floral motifs from Bulgari’s Sapphire Flower Collection, as well as Van Cleef & Arpels, whose delicate Snowflake fleurette necklace is one of the priciest items, at $304,500.

Miss Purotu event to dazzle at Aloha Tower

The second annual Miss Purotu Pageant 2011 will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Aloha Tower Marketplace waterfront, featuring music, dance, fashion and more in celebration of Tahitian culture.

Nine contestants, ages 17 to 27, will vie for the title of Miss Purotu 2011, and six keiki, ages 5 to 9, will compete for the title of Miss Purotu Iti 2011.

The women will compete in five categories: Costume Naturel, Pareu, Talent, Island Formal Wear and Interview.

During the Costume Naturel segment, the contestants will model a gown they created from the island’s natural resources. In the Pareu category, they will use three yards of Tahitian fabric to create an outfit that reflects their personality.

For the Island Formal category, the contestants will model Robe Purotu (Tahitian-style gowns) and Purotu Designs’ Tahitian pearl jewelry.

Daryl Hall and John Oates, rock and soul pioneers who have topped the charts eight times in a career spanning more than 30 years, are coming to Honolulu for a March 5 show at Blaisdell Arena.

Fans in Hawaii have followed the duo since their early days, and island acts such as Kalapana and Cecilio & Kapono have covered Hall & Oates songs locally.
