Waipahu man, 21, is mo-ped victim

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified a 21-year-old man who died after a Village Park mo-ped crash Monday as Tyson Mitsu Decosta of Waipahu.

The results of an autopsy were not available yesterday.

Police said Decosta was driving a stolen, yellow 1998 mo-ped that crashed into the back of a parked pickup truck on Kupuna Loop Monday at 5:24 p.m.

He was thrown onto the road and suffered head injuries, police said. His condition worsened in the hospital, and he died at 10:22 p.m., police said.

Police said speeding might have been a factor in the crash and that Decosta was not wearing a helmet.

It was the eighth traffic fatality this year on Oahu.

Truck driver dies from crash injuries

A pickup truck driver who was in a collision on Likelike Highway Friday night died over the weekend.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Steven Soriano, 36, of Honolulu. He died at the hospital on Sunday.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

The crash happened at Likelike Highway and Valley View Drive at about 10:43 p.m. Friday.

Police said Soriano was driving a 1993 Ford F-150 pickup toward Honolulu when he made a left turn into the path of a 2008 Ford F-350 pickup traveling toward Kaneohe.

Soriano was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck, police said. He suffered critical injuries.

The driver of the Ford F-350 went to the Queen’s Medical Center in good condition. Police said the 35-year-old Honolulu man was wearing a seat belt.

Police said speeding might have been a factor.

Man is shot at Safeway parking lot

A 21-year-old man went to the hospital with a gunshot wound Monday night after struggling with a robber in the parking lot of the Mililani Safeway, police said.

The incident happened at about 9:50 p.m. Police said two men approached the victim after he parked his car, and one of the men demanded money. The 21-year-old man said he had no money, and a second man allegedly brandished a firearm and also demanded money.

The victim and second suspect struggled over the weapon, and the first suspect punched the victim, police said. During the struggle, the gun went off and a bullet struck the victim, police said. Family members took him to a local hospital.

Police did not give a condition for the victim.

Police are still looking for the suspects. No description was available.

Collision hurts motorcyclist critically

A 22-year-old Pearl Harbor man suffered critical injuries Monday afternoon in a crash involving a car and motorcycle at Radford and Center drives.

Police said the 22-year-old man was riding a red Yamaha motorcycle heading east on Radford Drive that hit a 2007 silver Acura sedan making a left turn onto Center Drive.

The 76-year-old Honolulu man driving the Acura was not injured. Police said the 22-year-old man was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered facial and spinal injuries. He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition, but his condition was downgraded to critical.

Police said he was wearing a helmet and might have been speeding when the crash happened.

Maui police request help to find woman

Maui police are asking for the public’s help to find a 22-year-old woman.

Savanna Brown last spoke with her grandmother by phone on Dec. 12 when the grandmother bought a one-way ticket for her to fly back to Oregon on Dec. 14. Brown never caught the plane. Her grandmother, Ramona Jones, traveled to Maui and reported her missing Friday morning, police said.

People reported last seeing her on Jan. 1 with her boyfriend, Henry Brewer III. They might be living out of a Dodge van painted in a camouflage pattern, police said.

Brown is 5 feet 3 inches tall and 135 pounds, with blond hair and hazel eyes. Anyone with information is asked to call Maui police or Maui CrimeStoppers at 242-6966.
