William and Kate mull urging gifts to charity

LONDON » Royal aides say Prince William and Kate Middleton are considering asking guests at their April 29 wedding to make donations to charity instead of sending wedding gifts.

"It is one thing being studied," a spokesman said yesterday, asking not to be identified because of royal family policy.

A substantial amount of money could be raised for charity this way.

Close friends and family could still give the couple traditional gifts.

The royal couple, who will have access to great wealth, are said to be determined that their wedding is not seen as overly ostentatious at a time when the British economy is hurting.

The ceremony at Westminster Abbey will be followed by a Buckingham Palace reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II, William’s grandmother, and later a gala dinner-dance hosted by Prince Charles, William’s father.

Law will be a sailor in play by O’Neill

LONDON » Jude Law will return to the London stage this year, playing a sailor who falls in love with a prostitute in Eugene O’Neill’s "Anna Christie."

Law will star opposite Ruth Wilson when the play opens in August at the 250-seat Donmar Warehouse, where Law starred as Hamlet in 2009.

Law is currently reprising his film role as Dr. Watson in a sequel to Guy Ritchie’s "Sherlock Homes."

"Anna Christie" is part of a farewell season for artistic director Michael Grandage, who steps down in December. His nine-year tenure has seen a string of successes, including "Frost/Nixon," "Red" and "Hamlet," all of which transferred to Broadway.

The season also includes John Osborne’s "Inadmissible Evidence" and a production of Shakespeare’s "Richard II" with Eddie Redmayne.
