Narcissus queen, court crowned

Ningjin Miao, 26, of Makiki was crowned 2011 Narcissus Queen on Jan. 8 at the Hawaii Theatre.

Miao and her court will represent the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii in this Year of the Rabbit and will be "ambassadors of aloha" on the chamber’s Goodwill Tour to China this summer. Miao will be officially crowned by Gov. Neil Abercrombie at a coronation ball Saturday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Miao, daughter of Xiaoping Miao, was born in Nanjing in China’s Jiangsu province. She is a graduate of Fa’asao Marist High School in America Samoa and is attending the University of Hawaii -Manoa, where she is pursuing a master’s in accounting. She speaks Mandarin, and her interests include dancing, reading and outdoor activities.

Also crowned at the 62nd annual Narcissus Queen Pageant were first princess Christina Soo Hoo, 23, of Makiki, also picked Miss Talent; second princess Jasmine Nip, 26, of Kaimuki, also named Miss Congeniality; third princess Stacey Lam Baba, 25, of Aiea; and fourth princess Laura Jo-Hsuan Hung, 19, of Moiliili.

Miss Popularity was Erica Lee.

Hall & Oates performs March 5

Daryl Hall & John Oates, rock and soul pioneers who have topped the charts eight times in a career spanning more than 30 years, are coming to Honolulu for a March 5 show at Blaisdell Arena.

Fans in Hawaii have followed the duo since their early days, and island acts such as Kalapana and Cecilio & Kapono have covered Hall & Oates songs locally.

There’s still time to enroll in ballet

The School of Hawaii State Ballet, under direction of John Landovsky and Gina Surles, will continue its open enrollment period for new students through Jan. 31. Call 947-2755 for more information or to arrange an appointment.

Beginner classes are now open for Preballet, ages 3 to 5, and Junior I, ages 6 and up, as well as other classes for students who already have some formal ballet training. Classes also are offered for adult and teens.

In its 27-year history, Hawaii State Ballet has turned out a number of dancers now performing with professional companies. The organization trained Amanda Schull, star of the films "Center Stage" and "Mao’s Last Dancer," and Erica Wong, who won first place at the American Ballet Competition in Austin, Texas, last spring.

 

Teen health PSA contest begins

The Hawaii Medical Service Association, with the state Department of Education and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, has launched the 2011 HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest, which challenges middle and high school students to create public service announcements on teen health issues.

This year’s theme is "Your choices today impact tomorrow." Entries should related to one of three categories: mental, physical o0r social health. Judges will select winners based on content, impact/effectiveness, creativity and videography. Winning videos will be broadcast on local television stations.

Winning students’ schools will receive cash prizes to purchase video equipment or software, with first place in each category getting $1,500; second, $750; and third, $300. The best of show will receive an additional $1,000.

The public can vote for their favorite video at hmsa.com from 8 a.m. April 4 through 4 p.m. April 15. The video with the most votes will win a $500 prize.

The entry deadline is March 7, with winners announced at an awards ceremony May 4 at the Hawai’i Convention Center.

Information packets, including contest rules and entry forms, have been sent to schools statewide.
