Hawaii Baptist edges University

CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL / CRUSSELL@STARADVERTISER.COM
University's Crystal Wang fouled Jordin Ramos of Hawaii Baptist last night.

Kayla Yamamoto scored 13 points as Hawaii Baptist survived for a 39-38 win over University last night before an overflow crowd at muggy Dan Liu Gym on the HBA campus.

HBA improved to 11-1 in Division II of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, clinching no worse than a tie for the regular-season title. A win by coach Keith Sugiura’s Eagles over Le Jardin on Thursday would clinch the title outright, as well as an automatic state-tourney berth and a probable first-round bye.

"It means a lot. It’s a big win. We knew who wanted it more, who wanted it more at the end," said Yamamoto, who scored a key basket in the late going on a smooth crossover move in transition.

University, which closed regular-season play at 11-2 (14-5 overall), can only hope for a win by the winless Bulldogs of Le Jardin.

"They had more energy from beginning to end," said University post Quynne Eharis, who finished with a game-high 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. "We couldn’t match up with their energy, and we dug ourselves a hole too deep."

The Junior Rainbows brought a vocal following of about 150 fans and rallied from 13 points down to get within 39-38 on a 3-point corner shot by Chanelle Maldonado with 1:26 remaining.

HBA was 0-for-5 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and nearly let the game slip away, but University fared no better. The Junior ‘Bows were 9-for-21 from the stripe for the game, including a miss on a 1-and-1 by Eharis with 24 seconds left.

Kimberly Au missed the front of a 1-and-1 with 14 seconds left, but Maldonado missed a 10-foot baseline shot in traffic that would’ve given UHS the lead.

After HBA’s Rebecca Dang missed two free throws with 5.6 seconds left, UHS failed to get a shot off. Maldonado’s inbounds pass to Crystal Wang at midcourt was intercepted by Au, and time expired.

The Junior ‘Bows were fantastic from the field — 64 percent (14-for-22) — but turned the ball over 24 times. Ten of the giveaways came in the first quarter.

Eharis dominated inside (6-for-6 from the field), but often didn’t get a touch because of HBA’s fullcourt pressure. Au, who had five of her team’s 10 steals, scored seven of her eight points in the second quarter as the Eagles soared ahead.

Three-point bombs by Reanna Lee, Yamamoto and Au helped HBA take a 28-15 lead late in the first half.

In the end, however, the Junior ‘Bows were exhausted after using just six players. Three players were on the shelf; one recently returned from Japan, another suffered an injury at practice, and another has missed time to attend a funeral.

The Junior ‘Bows still have a shot at winning a state title. They have one of the ILH’s four state berths.

"We’re bummed we couldn’t win ILH D-II like we did in volleyball," said Eharis, an All-State Fab 15 selection. "But my head’s not down at all."

ILH Division II Boys

University 68, Hawaii Baptist 62, 2OT

Down three starters in hostile territory, the University Junior Rainbows went deep into their bench when hope dwindled.

They got two huge blocks from reserve forward Peter Fee, plus a putback that gave UHS the lead for good in a wild double overtime win over Hawaii Baptist last night before a frenzied, capacity crowd at Dan Liu Gym.

"D-I or D-II, that’s got to be the most exciting game of the year," University coach Walt Quitan said after three of his starters fouled out.

"As a coach, it’s a cliche, but you always tell your bench to be ready. That’s what they work hard at practice for," he said. "They came in and made big-time plays," Quitan said.

HBA shot 11-for-27 from the foul line, including seven misses in a row in the final 2:22 of regulation.

"I’m exhausted," HBA coach George Weeks said. "We played with heart. The ball didn’t fall our way, we couldn’t hit free throws, but we grew tonight. I’m super proud of what we did tonight."

The homecoming crowd of more than 1,000 endured smothering humidity, but it was UHS that withstood multiple challenges. The ‘Bows led 53-43 with 4:36 to go before HBA made a valiant comeback, getting a 29-foot trey by Kalei Hosaka (standing on the Eagle logo), and tying the game on a pump-fake 3-pointer by Sage Bulesco with 1 second left in regulation.

HBA had a brief lead in the first overtime after Jun Fritz nailed a 25-foot 3-pointer, but UHS rallied behind Guiherme Aires and Andrew Canencia, who had 17 points each.

Aires, the starting point guard, fouled out with 3:16 left in the second overtime on a borderline flop by Hosaka. Instead of folding, the Junior ‘Bows regrouped with Canencia at the point, and Fee came through with his big defensive stops. Canencia and Eugene Malvar hit free throws to give UHS a 66-62 lead with 53 seconds left, and Canencia iced the win with two more foul shots with 32 ticks left.

Fritz led the run-and-gun Eagles with 16 points, including five 3-pointers.
