2 lost hikers are rescued

Firefighters rescued two hikers lost in the mountains above Dillingham Airfield yesterday.

The visitors called for help at about 6:05 p.m., reporting that they could not find their way out of Kealia Trail, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

He said the hikers were in an area with several trails near the Mokuleia end of Farrington Highway.

A fire helicopter lowered rescue firefighters onto the trail. They found the hikers and walked them out of the area after 8:45 p.m. yesterday, Seelig said.

The hikers were not injured.

Firefighters also rescued a woman who was injured yesterday while hiking on Diamond Head.

The woman was near the bottom of the trail when she hurt her arm, he said.

Firefighters loaded her onto a stretcher and carried her off the trail. She was transferred to paramedics in the parking lot of Diamond Head Crater, Seelig said.

Alcohol suspected in wreck

Honolulu police say alcohol might be a factor in a critical accident early yesterday morning in Mililani.

Police say a 25-year-old Mililani man was driving north on Kamehameha Highway just after 2 a.m. when his white 2008 Nissan Frontier pickup truck crossed into the median and hit a utility pole.

The man, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected from the truck and suffered head injuries, police said. He was taken in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center.

The accident happened about one mile south of Lanikuhana Avenue. Police said speed might also have been a factor in the crash.

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions at Ka Uka Boulevard and Lanikuhana for about two hours following the crash while traffic officers investigated the accident.

Cause of driver’s death ID’d

The death of a 79-year-old man in Wednesday’s single-car crash was caused by a health condition unrelated to the crash, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said.

George Fujimoto, 79, of Mililani died after a swelling of the large blood vessel in his abdomen ruptured, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

The Mililani crash happened at 7:02 a.m. Wednesday at Meheula Parkway and Kuahelani Avenue, police said.

Fujimoto’s Toyota Corolla hit a traffic light, continued through the intersection and came to rest against another traffic light post, police said. He died at the hospital.
