‘Practical Kabbalah’ rabbi to speak

"Think Right, Speak Right, and Do It Right — How to Create a New Screen-Saver of Your Mind" will be the topic of a series of lectures tomorrow through Jan. 22 by Rabbi Dr. Laibl Wolf of Melbourne, Australia.

Wolf is a psychologist, lawyer, Hassidic rabbi and the author of "Practical Kabbalah." He lectures in more than 75 cities a year throughout the world on training people in the discipline of mind consciousness and emotional intelligence. He draws from contemporary psychology and the Kabbalah, the mystical side of Judaism.

He will speak on Kauai tomorrow and in Kona Wednesday. The lectures are sponsored by Chabad of Hawaii.

On Oahu, lectures will be held Friday and next Saturday at Chabad, on the second floor of the Ala Moana Hotel in the Kona tower.

The highlight will be a PowerPoint presentation and lecture at 7:45 p.m. next Saturday, Shabbat day, $10 for adults. Earlier on Shabbat, free lectures are at 9:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and include free lunch.

Wolf also will speak at 6 p.m. Friday, with services and a meal for $30 for kamaaina adults, $60 for visitors; pre-paid reservations are required.

Events honor saint on her feast day

The Blessed Marianne Cope of Molokai will be honored in three events celebrating her Jan. 23 "feast day."

"Feast" or "feast day" is a Catholic term to designate a day that celebrates a saint, said Patrick Downes, spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu.

Bishop Larry Silva will conduct a Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in Honolulu. Later that day, a celebration will be held at 5 p.m. at Cope’s statue at Kewalo Basin Park. Both are open to the public.

There are several openings left for a one-day pilgrimage next Saturday to Kalaupapa, Molokai, sponsored by Seawind Tours and Travel. The cost is $375 per person. Call Seawind at 949-4144 for more information.

Cope went to Kalaupapa in 1888 to join Father Damien de Veuster, who had established a settlement for leprosy patients. She died in 1918 and was buried at Kalaupapa. Her remains were exhumed in 2005 as part of the beatification process and taken to the Franciscan Sister’s motherhouse in Syracuse, N.Y. She was beatified on May 14, 2005, in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Breakfast with Bishop set in Kailua

St. John Vianney School and Parish in Kailua will host its first "Breakfast with the Bishop" fundraiser on Jan. 23.

A breakfast buffet will be served at 8 and 10 a.m. and noon following Mass. The Rev. Larry Silva, bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu, will attend all three breakfasts and speak on the value of a Catholic education, said Earl Walker of St. John’s Pastoral Council.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for students 15 and younger, and will be available until Friday. For more information or to buy tickets, call 261-4651.

Proceeds will be used for tuition assistance for about a third of its pre-kindergarten-through-grade 8 students, whose families have been affected by the recession. Funds also will be used to implement a 10-year strategy to improve learning through use of the latest technology, Walker said.
