Strength clinic Jan. 28-29
Washington Redskins head strength and conditioning coach Ray Wright and two-time Olympic weightlifting gold medalist Tommy Kono are the keynote speakers at the University of Hawaii Strength Clinic, Jan. 28-29.
Wright will speak on football strength and conditioning and Kono will talk about the power of the mind. Nine other speakers are scheduled, with expertise in baseball, soccer, MMA and other sports.

Looking for a challenge?
The Duke Kahanamoku Challenge on Jan. 23 has openings for teams wanting to compete in the canoe races and makahiki games.
The canoe race is a double-elimination quarter-mile race based on skill level.
The entry fee of $600 includes T-shirts for 12 members (6 for canoe race, 6 for makahiki games) and a team tent.

Proceeds go to the Waikiki Community Center. Contact the center at 923-1802 to enter. This is the 26th year of the event, formerly known as the Ala Wai Challenge.
Kanaka Ikaika season opens
The Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association opens its season Sunday with a 5-mile short course and an 8-mile long course.
Registration for both races is at Makai Pier, with the finish for both at Kailua Beach Park. Competition is in OC-1, OC-2, surfski, prone paddleboard and SUP.
Great Aloha Run workshops
Nicole Lamb and Hina Torres de Sa are conducting "in training" workshops for registered participants of the Feb. 21 Great Aloha Run.
