Crash victim likely speeding, drinking

Police say speed and alcohol were factors in a crash that killed a 26-year-old man in the South Kohala district on Wednesday.

Jonathan E.H. Chambers of Waikoloa drove his 2006 Toyota pickup off the right side of Lua Kula Street and hit a light post, then a tree at about 11:35 p.m., Big Island police said.

Chambers was pinned in the pickup and had to be extricated by firefighters. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Chambers is the third traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with three at this time last year.

His condition was not immediately known.
