‘Iolani presses to victory
Lahela Usui scored 13 of her game-high 16 points in the first half as No. 5 ‘Iolani overwhelmed No. 9 Kamehameha 77-53 in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu basketball game last night at Kekuhaupio Gym.
‘Iolani improved to 5-2 in the ILH (10-6 overall). Kamehameha fell to 1-5 in league play (3-7 overall).
A crowd of about 200 saw the Raiders use incessant defensive pressure, trapping fullcourt and halfcourt, to force 20 first-half turnovers by the stunned Warriors. By then, the visitors in red had a 45-21 lead.
Usui and her teammates were proficient on the fastbreak even when the Warriors retreated quickly. Usui hit a pair of 3-pointers, including one as a trailer on the break.
Saphyre Rezentes added 10 points and five assists. Reserve guards Kaitlyn Tom (12 points) and Abrianna Johnson-Edwards (11 points) provided plenty of spark off the bench.
Forwards Alex Masaquel and Taimane Passi provided power under the boards. Masaquel finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.

"We can trust our bigs. We treat them as third guards," Usui said.
It was quite a difference from the first meeting between the teams, a 47-45 win by Kamehameha at ‘Iolani’s gym Nov. 27.
"We had time to work together as a team, so now we gel more together," said guard Kylie Maeda, who finished with eight points and three assists. "We’re getting a better feel of how each other plays. Our rotation got better, so we’re getting more steals."
"Their plan was obvious," Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett said. "There was a lot of pressure and contact. They could lose five people and keep playing."
Two Raiders fouled out: Shikada, early in the third quarter, and Masaquel.
Lilia Maio led Kamehameha with 13 points. Freshman Alohi Robins-Hardy scored 10 points and hauled in six boards. Manu Noa added nine points and hustled for 10 boards, and Deja Tafiti tallied nine points.
The Warriors outrebounded ‘Iolani 37-27, pulling down 18 offensive boards, but shot just 40 percent from the field (18-for-45) and turned the ball over 30 times in all.
Kamehameha got more familiar with the Raiders’ press in the second half and found much more success attacking the basket. Maio scored 11 of her 13 points after halftime, even with ‘Iolani rotating starters with reserves.
"There was lots of fear. It’s about confidence," Cockett said. "I’m satisfied that we fought hard coming back. Lilia rebounded and played defense well. Manu played a smart game."
Winning the ILH regular-season title means an automatic state-tournament spot. Only two squads will get state berths.
