When No. 3 Academy of the Pacific and No. 7 Roosevelt turned to their benches for support in the second round of Na Menehune Holiday Classic yesterday, it was for different reasons.

AOP coach Walter Marciel saw a winded Micah Dunhour, ailing with the flu, and knew he needed some gusto from his reserves. He got it from Drew Viena, who scored 13 points off the bench, as the Dolphins roared to a 54-33 win at Moanalua High School gym.

The Dolphins advanced to the semifinal round and play Moanalua today.

Wilson Macleod led AOP with 14 points and three steals, while swingman Kona Makaula and post Moritz Krume combined for 15 rebounds in a dominant victory.

Dunhour finished with five points and four rebounds.

Roosevelt was coming off an overtime win over University High in the opening round. With starting posts Kaipo Pale and Asten Koki averaging roughly 30 minutes per game, coach Steve Hathaway decided before game time that his starters would play only half their usual stints.

"We wanted to win yesterday’s game so we could face Roosevelt. They’re a very tough team," Marciel said. "Roosevelt’s in a tough league. I know that from experience, so I know what he’s trying to do."

In addition to combating fatigue, Roosevelt lost point guard Johnson Delos Reyes recently with a wrist injury.

The result was a combined 10 points for the Rough Riders’ starting five, including a season-low two points and six rebounds for Pale, one of the state’s most consistent double-double performers. In the big picture, Roosevelt (7-3 overall, 5-1 Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East) saved its legs for the coming midseason run in league play.

Sophomore guard Shai Brown led Roosevelt with 11 points, including 3-for-7 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc.

AOP, meanwhile, resumed its Cinderella journey through Division I basketball. The Dolphins are now 11-2 overall (1-0 Interscholastic League of Honolulu) and prove over and over that they are more than just Dunhour and a tall (6-foot-5) German (Krume).

Macleod, a junior guard, and backcourt mate Michael Urcia were steady from the start. AOP committed just seven turnovers against Roosevelt’s 2-3 zone. Urcia, a transfer from D-II Christian Academy, hit two early treys as the Dolphins opened with an 11-2 lead and were never seriously threatened.

Roosevelt’s starters were subbed out 5-for-5 most of the way. The Rough Riders shot 25 percent from the field (11-for-44) against AOP’s man and 2-3 zone defenses. They were outrebounded 33-20.

AOP snagged 13 offensive caroms and shot 40 percent (16-for-40). Neither team shot well from the line; AOP was 19-for-33 (58 percent) while Roosevelt was 8-for-15 (53 percent). It was an improvement from Roosevelt’s 3-for-17 work at the charity stripe in the University game.

There is, of course, the possibility that the teams could meet again in the state tourney. By then, there won’t be any more holding back. Both teams resume league play next week.
