Sukumaran steps up
'Iolani's Josiah Sukumaran tried to shoot over Kamehameha's Micah Christenson last night.
Josiah Sukumaran scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and came up with a game-saving block as time expired to give No. 2 ‘Iolani a thrilling 41-40 win over top-ranked Kamehameha last night at the Raiders’ gym.
‘Iolani improved to 2-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and is riding high heading into a trip to San Diego the day after Christmas.
Kamehameha, which dropped to 1-1 in league play, got 12 points and eight boards from Micah Christenson, and another dozen points from Dyrbe Enos.
It was Enos whose shot was denied by Sukumaran, a 6-foot-3 swingman, in the final 6.2 seconds. First, the rangy senior fouled Enos at midcourt to stop his momentum, leaving just 2.9 seconds for the Warriors, who had no timeouts to diagram a play.
The Raiders, who limited Kamehameha to 38 percent shooting (12-for-32), locked down defensively. Trevyn Tulonghari denied Micah Christenson the ball and Enos was forced to create off the dribble. He penetrated into the lane, but Sukumaran was ready.
"I told myself, ‘I’m not going for the fake.’ I just stuck my hands up and happened to block it," he said of the play near the foul line.

"That last play, we ran our sideline play," Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "We didn’t have any timeouts left, so that’s on me. I’ll take that one."
"We just wanted to keep the ball out of Micah’s hands," Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto said. "He’s a tough matchup on Dyrbe."
It was the first meeting between the teams since ‘Iolani toppled Kamehameha in the state tourney final last season. Coming off a confidence-building week in the ‘Iolani Classic, the Raiders are on a roll.
"We’re still trying to put it together. On both sides, it’s still kind of ugly," Shimamoto said.
"We thought we played really well with Oak Hill (Va.) and we managed to win our last game (Mason County, Ky.). Now we took down Kamehameha, which is a big win for us," said Sukumaran, who was 7-for-11 from the field.
Reid Saito added nine points, but was involved in a bizarre situation late in the fourth quarter. After grabbing a rebound off his miss, a foul was called on the Warriors, but Saito was called for a technical foul.
After Saito made a free throw — officials ruled he was in the act of shooting — and Enos sank two foul shots for the Warriors, ‘Iolani led 37-36 with 3:08 remaining.
On the ensuing play, Shane Yoshida cut backdoor for a layup and the Warriors led for the first time, 38-37, with 2:55 left.
The lead lasted just 20 seconds. Sukumaran’s layup put ‘Iolani ahead 39-38.
Reserve guard Frank Ho sank a baseline jumper for a 40-39 Kamehameha lead, but Sukumaran hustled for a putback and a 41-40 Raiders lead with 27 seconds left.
Now both teams have tournaments ahead, but also more time for practice with winter break here.
"We need to focus on the small things. We’ve had a lack of preparation time, but ‘Iolani’s had even less," Nakanishi said. "We had some guys with a lot of gritty play. Davis (Achong) gave us a lot of good defensive pressure."
‘Iolani shot 50 percent from the field (18-for-36) and outrebounded Kamehameha 23-11. The Raiders also had more turnovers (17-14).
It was the second loss in a row for Kamehameha, which fell to rising AOP on Tuesday afternoon in the ‘Iolani Classic.
