Kamehameha-Hawaii tips McKinley

FL MORRIS / FMORRIS@STARADVERTISER.COM
Kamehameha-Hawaii's Shaun Kagawa tried to avoid Wilhem Rivera of McKinley last night.

It wasn’t pretty and it sure wasn’t easy, but Dominic Pacheco had no complaints after the game.

Fifth-ranked Kamehameha-Hawaii struggled from the perimeter, but buckled down defensively to outlast McKinley 48-41 last night in the opening round of the Punahou Invitational.

The game was played at Maryknoll’s Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium after Punahou’s Hemmeter Fieldhouse floor was deemed unplayable for the first two games of the tourney due to incoming moisture.

Jayce Carvalho, a 6-foot-4 junior, anchored the Warriors offensively from the high post. He finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Guard Lanaki Apele was another source of stability. He had five of his team’s 13 steals as the Warriors used double-team traps in full and halfcourt looks. McKinley finished with 31 turnovers, offsetting a decent shooting night (16-for-34, 46 percent).

"We rely on our defensive pressure. We have kind of an athletic group, so if we can come with the defensive pressure like that, we can go far," Pacheco said.

The Warriors, now 8-0 in nonconference play, had just a 24-21 edge on the boards. However, nine of those caroms were on the offensive end against McKinley’s compact 2-3 zone. The Tigers had just three offensive boards against the taller Warriors man-to-man defense.

Alex Ironside, a junior swingman, had 11 points and six boards to lead McKinley (8-3 overall). Rio Kwan, a senior guard, had 10 points and junior Wilhem Rivera added eight.

"We tried to change up our trap. We came from a different angle," Warriors coach Dominic Pacheco said. "It kind of worked out at the end."

The Tigers’ usual sharpshooting touch wasn’t there. They shot just 3-for-11 from deep, but defensively, were sticky.

"That was an impressive zone. They made things difficult for us," Pacheco said.

KS-Hawaii shot 2-for-12 from 3-point range, but wasn’t bad overall from the field at 42 percent (20-for-48).

"It’s good to come here and get used to aggressive play," Pacheco said. "I’m glad we have that opportunity and it’s only going to get us better."

After six lead changes, the Warriors gained an edge in the third quarter. Kaeo Alapai’s post move gave KS-Hawaii a 23-22 lead, and after Jalen Carvalho swished a trey from the right wing and Jayce Carvalho scored inside, the Warriors were on their way to an 11-3 run.

Spotty free-throw shooting — 6-for-14 — limited the Warriors’ chance of breaking the game open, however.

McKinley was within striking distance at 42-37 after a pair of foul shots by Leslie Machiguchi, but Apele fed Jacob Kackley for a layup and Jayce Carvalho dished to a cutting Shaun Kagawa for another bucket. The Warriors led 46-37 with 2 minutes left and McKinley got no closer than six the rest of the way.

Kamehameha-Hawaii will meet today’s Punahou-Kalani winner. The second two games scheduled for last night were not played due to a slippery floor. Punahou and Kalani will try to make up the game this morning, with Punahou II and Mid-Pacific to follow.

The tourney will remain at Punahou until the final, which will tip off tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Stan Sheriff Center. There will be no admission fee for the championship game.

In the tourney opener, Melbourne Grammar (Australia) edged Maryknoll 53-48.
