A little bit of this. A little bit of that.

And a lot different from being the Wall Street investment banker Wayne Coito envisioned being at this point of his life.

Instead, the 27-year-old decided to return home after graduating from Vassar with a degree in economics and computer science and become invested in the workings of the Pacific West Conference. The 2001 Kamehameha Schools product is the compliance/external operations director for the PacWest and "it’s hard to give my job description," Coito said. "What I like is being able to do so many things."

Coito oversees player eligibility for the NCAA Division II conference and handles the PacWest Magazine, which is a three-part product: printed magazine, Internet radio broadcast and TV show on OC16.

Favorite part?

"Doing our TV and radio shows is pretty great," he said. "I had started doing some acting on the side (in college) and it ties in with that.

"And I did some play-by-play for HPU’s (national title) softball run.

"It’s pretty cool to be the junior commissioner."

Becoming familiar with the NCAA manual is pretty daunting, he said, but his background in logic has helped. So has his background in athletics; he originally was going to swim and play basketball for Vassar but ended up playing volleyball for the D-III Brewers.

"In the end, it all goes back to what’s fair," Coito said of the NCAA rules. "A lot of lawyers are compliance officers. I got thrust into it and it is challenging."

So was adjusting to the weather on the Vassar campus in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

"Snow is highly overrated," he said. "It’s a fascinating concept, coming down from the sky, but it gets cold pretty quick."

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Honors to HPU forward

Hawaii Pacific junior forward Mana Hopkins-Vandenakker earned the PacWest weekly honor for helping the women Sea Warriors go 2-0 last week.

The Konawaena High product averaged 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds, and scored her career high (26 points) in the win over Fayetteville State. She led the conference in scoring for the week with her 42 points, which included going 7-for-8 from the line.

HONOR ROLL

» Courtney Buster, HPU: The senior center averaged 19 points and 4.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Sea Warriors. She was 10-for-12 from the free-throw line and hit four 3-pointers.

» Paris Gravely, HPU: The junior guard scored 11 points and hit the game-winning free throw with 3 seconds left in a 68-67 win over Charleston last week. She also had 19 points as HPU topped Fayetteville State.

» Dara Tompkison, BYUH: The junior guard out of Punahou averaged 16.5 points, 4.0 steals and 4.5 assists as the Seasiders went 0-2.

» Tsung-Hsein "Jet" Chang, BYUH: The junior guard scored 21 points in the 71-55 win over Western Oregon.

» Chris Curtis, Chaminade: The junior guard scored 22 points in the loss to Texas A&M International, shooting 75 percent (9-for-12) from the floor.

» Justin Smith, UHH: The senior forward averaged 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Vulcans went 2-1.

» Marques Whippy, BYUH: The senior guard had 14 rebounds in the Seasiders’ win over Western Oregon. He added seven points and four steals.

» Zach Wilde, UHH: The junior forward averaged 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds for the Vulcans in three games.
