Honolulu ranks high in economic survey
Honolulu has one of the 20 strongest economies in the nation, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution.
Cities with the lowest unemployment: 1. Omaha, Neb. 5.1% |
The report by the Washington, D.C.-based think tank showed the city scored well in a number of economic measures in the third quarter, including having the third lowest unemployment rate of the top 100 metropolitan areas surveyed. Honolulu’s 5.4 percent jobless rate compared with the national average of 9.4 percent.
Honolulu was one of only 15 large metropolitan areas that had at least three quarters of consecutive job growth during the last year, the report said.
The city’s economy has been improving, largely because of an increase in tourism. Arrivals are up nearly 8 percent this year.
Honolulu’s economy has grown 5.7 percent since the end of 2008, according to the Brookings report, the fifth best rate of growth among the top 100 cities.
Honolulu also had the 17th lowest number of bank-owned homes at 2.16 per 1,000 properties eligible for mortgages. The report also showed that Honolulu’s housing prices were down 14.4 percent in the third quarter from a peak in early 2007, ranking it 45th nationally in terms of price decline.
