Abercrombie nominates Wong to head defense, Okimoto for transportation

Gov. Neil Abercrombie today named Maj. Gen. Darryll Wong his nominee to lead the state’s Department of Defense and Glenn Okimoto to lead the Department of Transportation.

The appointments leave only two department director posts — Health and Attorney General — to be filled by the new governor.

All director appointments are subject to Senate confirmation once the Legislature begins the 2011 session.

Abercrombie also named a slew of deputy directors, most notably the three who will serve under Okimoto in the Department of Transportation: Randy Grune, deputy in charge of harbors; Ford Fuchigami, deputy in charge of airports; and Jadine Urasaki, deputy in charge of capital improvements projects.

Other appointments announced by the governor today include Jeffrey T. Ono as the consumer advocate, Gordon Ito as insurance commissioner and Mila Kaahanui as director of the Office of Community Services.
