A private contractor was to continue his assessment today of an Aiea Heights hillside above a two-story home that was struck by a boulder over the weekend.

"Just looking at the hillside, it looks like there are some areas that are loose and should be investigated," said Cliff Tillotson, vice president of Prometheus Construction.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, two people were injured when a large boulder struck the home at 99-868 Holoai St. in the Aiea Park Place subdivision. A man, 50, and woman, 36, were taken in stable condition to a hospital.

A large boulder apparently came loose from about 40 to 50 yards above the home and split apart as it rolled down. The impact created a 6-by-6-foot hole in the wall of a first-floor bedroom.

Neighbors assisted the man, who was found lying in the hallway, and the woman, who was trapped under a desk. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

One rock was estimated at 6 feet in diameter, and another at 3 feet. Tillotson noted a fresh depression on the hillside where the boulder appeared to have originated.

Yellow tape stretched around the house yesterday.

"The people are so lucky," he said. "The boulders decimated the room."

Root wedging and soil swelling due to heavy rainfall from a storm Thursday are possible contributing factors to the rockfall. Tillotson will determine what needs to be done to stabilize the hillside, which is the property of the homeowners of Aiea Park Place.
